Cable Detection
Cable detection is essential before doing any earthworks, such as excavation, piling and pipe-jacking works. Cable detection helps in preventing damage to underground utility lines by marking out where cables lay.
Damage done to any underground utility cables can result in disruption of services such as power, gas and telecommunication. This disruption could cause severe consequences such as power outages and gas leakages.
More importantly, this damage translates to heavy fines as well as possible imprisonment for the parties involved, based on the severity of the damage caused.
Cable Tracing and ID
Cable tracing is a procedure in which a utility's routing is traced from point A to point B.
This is critical to note because underground cables do not often run straight and narrow, it is full of twists and turns. Thus, a licensed cable detection worker (LCDW) would be able to map out the exact route.
Cable ID is to identify and reconfirm that the cable being worked on to is the correct cable, such as power, pilot and communications cable.
This is important as wrong identification of cable could lead to cable damage and disastrous consequences.
Pilot Cable Fault Location Test
This process is to locate at which point is the pilot cable faulty.
The use of a pilot cable is for remote switching in a high voltage/high tension (HV/HT) network system.
Once identification of fault is done, repair of fault can commence. This usually takes place at the location of the fault itself.
